ID tags on MP3 music

Postby stratobuddy » Thu Nov 11, 2010 3:20 pm

I've decided to put all my CD's (and eventually vinyl) onto an Archos 705 media player, then store the physical CD's in boxes out of the way as they take up so much room on shelves and are a fuss to find and play.

This is a mammoth task, and I've spent over a week so far ripping them and converting to MP3's. I've only done about one tenth of them so far. :(

The way my Archos 705 finds music is a bit different to the way I want to organise it and search for specific music.

To achieve this, I've spent DAYS editing (on my PC) all the ID tags which are embedded in the MP3 tracks eg artist's name, album, song title, genre, etc.

Having transferred the ones I've done so far onto the Archos, I've found that a large number of these tags have reappeared on my PC and therefore been copied to the Archos.

I can only assume that while I've been on-line, and perhaps listening to music on my PC, Windows media player has been busy putting these tags back on, unbeknown to me.

Can anyone please explain what is going on, and how to stop these tags being reinstated?

To make it crystal clear for Cathy, when you download an MP3 track, it usually has hidden "Identification tags" embedded with the music. These identify the artist, album, song title and genre (eg rock, ballad, blues etc). The tags can also include the composer, year of issue and other information.

Most MP3 players use these tags to organise the music on it.

If EVERY piece of music had these tags, there would be no problem. However, loads of them don't, and then the MP3 player uses the filenames instead eg "Billy Fury - Forget Him.MP3".

Because of this mixture of having some music with tags and some without, all my MP3 players have problems, with everything mixed up so it is very difficult to find a particular track or singer.

I had the choice of either ADDING tags to all the music without them, but this would take "years" as every track would have to have all the information typed in manually (I have about 10,000 tracks in total). Or, I could REMOVE all the existing tags, and as this is much easier, that is what I did (although it still took days).

I then found that, between the time of removing the tags and loading the music onto my MP3 player, loads of them had reappeared!!! So I am back to square one

Alan I use this one http://www.123renamer.com/

It can rename in batches which is a great help even if the track isn't named, everything else is.
It also holds onto this information without Mediaplayer messing it up.
(however mediaplayer scans once to get tag info then uses this nfo to library songs, if you change the tag then you would have to get windows to scan and index again with the new information)

So you could tag all your Billy Fury ones with the 'ARTIST' tag and then just the ones from sound of fury with the 'ALBUM NAME', YEAR, GENRE etc all in one go.

Its a good program but I only use it to tag 1 album at a time when I need it, dont know what it would be like doing thousands but its got to be easier than doing them individually.

Website has a 20 day trial so you can give it a go and if you lke it, its under £20 to buy.

On another subject 'Audiograbber' by Jackie Franck is useful for ripping CD's as it links to the FreeDB to name ripped CD's automatically. You can also use it to convert Waves to MP3, ideal for making untagged Wave files into 'tagged' MP3's in the process.

It can even convert Mp3 to Mp3 simply to name them on one handy screen.
(I have this program if you can't find it)

This has been one of my most used programs over the years.

Hope it helps
