Facebook users warned about 'dislike button' scam

Facebook users are being warned not to fall for the latest scam on the site which offers them the chance to install a 'dislike' button.

Like most hoaxes to hit the social networking site recently, the scam is aimed at tricking users into allowing a rogue application to access their profile page.

The application then posts spam messages and attempts to lure people into completing an online survey that pays money to the fraudsters.

'It's the latest survey scam spreading virally across Facebook, using the tried-and-tested formula used in the past by other viral scams including "Justin Bieber trying to flirt", "Student attacked his teacher and nearly killed him", "the biggest and scariest snake" and the "world's worst McDonald's customer",' notes Graham Cluley from online security firm Sophos.

Facebook users can identify the scam by a message telling them to 'Download the official DISLIKE button now'.

Anyone who clicks on the link is then prompted to install a rogue application which doesn't actually function as a dislike button.

Their Facebook profile is updated with a link and a message, intended to be viewed by everyone on their friends list, that reads: 'I just got the dislike button, so now I can dislike all of your dumb posts lol!!!'

The latest scam preys on regular widespread calls across Facebook for a 'dislike' button that would serve a similar function to its current 'like' button in letting people give a 'thumbs down' to fellow users' comments and posts.

Like the fabled 'find out who's viewing your profile' scams, however, it is yet to actually move from the realm of fiction to reality
